Orientation Session and Admission Exam

Becoming an associate member of ATIS is the first step to becoming a certified translator. To become an associate member of ATIS, candidates must attend a mandatory information session and pass a translation exam. At the present time, ATIS offers the orientation session and the exams twice a year during the Spring and Fall sessions.

ATIS Orientation Session

The information session explains

  • The role of ATIS
  • The translation profession
  • The certification process
  • The code of ethics enforced by ATIS

The information session is free and can be held

  • In person in Regina or in Saskatoon
  • Virtually
  • Both in-person and virtually

Those who have attended the information session in the past are not required to attend it again but are encouraged to do so. Participants are not required to write the translation exam immediately following the information session.

Admission Exam

The translation exam is held approximately one month later in Regina, Saskatoon, and/or Zoom (if needed). The admission exam fee must be paid a week prior to the exam date in order to guarantee a seat to take the admission exam.

The translation exam involves the translation of one text of a general nature which is approximately 175-200 words in length in your chosen language combination. The exam lasts two (2) hours. If you plan and trust your abilities to write in two combinations, please contact the Exam Coordinator.

Candidates may bring any published reference material they wish to use. Electronic/digital support materials are not permitted..

If you are stronger in one language than the other, translating from the language in which you are less proficient to the one in which you are more proficient typically yields better
results than the reverse.
